Quality Assurance Systems and Projects

LanQua

LanQua was a three-year project (2007-2010) funded by the Commission of the European Communities Lifelong Learning Erasmus Network programme. The main aim of the project was to build on emerging European networks concerned with languages, bringing a wide range of providers and stakeholders together to produce a European quality benchmark for the area of languages, which enables institutions and stakeholders to assure and enhance the quality of provision in higher education.

The Quality Guide

The Quality Guide – originally a CD ROM – was the product of an EU Leonardo/Socrates project (1998-2002) that proposed quality as a key criterion for the design and evaluation of language learning programmes and materials. The Guide defined general principles of quality and then showed how these principles can be related to all aspects of the teaching and learning process (design, implementation, and outcomes). The Quality Guide was the inspiration for the structure of the QualiMatrix.

QualiTraining

The "QualiTraining Guide" provides a framework and tools for facilitating the implementation of quality principles and procedures at grassroots level. The Guide prompts readers to explore quality from different perspectives, and to reflect on how these can be applied in their own contexts. To illustrate how changes in the professional environment impact on the way the principles are applied, there is a description of how the Common European Framework of Reference has affected language education. Basic concepts related to quality assurance are discussed: how do we establish criteria and use these to set standards? What indicators can we use to find out if we are achieving quality? How can benchmarking help us in this work?

Eaquals

Eaquals is an international membership association whose mission is to foster excellence in language education across the world by providing practical support for language centres and teachers. It was founded in 1991 with a shared vision to develop a quality assurance scheme for all languages. Eaquals members – organisations and institutions involved in the teaching and learning of all languages – pursue the highest standards, following a code of practice and meeting the criteria of an inspection scheme for reaccreditation.

UNIcert

The UNIcert system of language education and certification is based on a policy document agreed by leading German universities, members of the Association of Language Centres in Germany (AKS). UNIcert helps universities to develop modern language course programmes appropriate for, and specific to, university education. It aims to standardise the grades awarded by universities in terms of the CEFR levels, offering a UNIcert language certificate. Members of the scheme comply with a policy framework and code of practice, subject to regular reaccreditation.

Other QA schemes

In addition there are several QA schemes related to teaching the language of a particular country in that country, for example:

  • The FLE quality label awarded jointly by the French  Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the Ministry of Culture and Communication
  • NEAS (linked to English Australia)

Finally, there are some national QA schemes concerned with the teaching of languages (usually English) in their country, which are also members of Eaquals,

for example:

  • AISLi (English in Italy)
  • MAQS (North Macedonia)
  • QQI (Ireland)
