CLIL in languages other than English –
Successful transitions across educational stages

The project will develop recommendations for implementing CLIL in languages other than English across educational stages (primary, secondary, tertiary), both in the language classroom and in other subjects. The recommendations will be illustrated through examples of practice from various contexts. The project sees CLIL as part of intercultural education and as a vehicle for promoting pluralistic approaches to language learning.

Recent developments

Expert contributions to the CLIL LOTE project network

The project’s network meeting in June 2021 was attended by around 60 experts and the CLIL LOTE network was launched. In 2021/22, 55 experts from 28 countries will form eight working groups in order to produce concrete materials. These will consist of:

  • recommendations for the further development of curricula and teacher education;
  • teaching materials that, among others, build on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR);
  • portfolio examples and
  • suggestions on how to establish collaboration between schools, teachers and students at different levels of education.

Survey

In early 2021 the project team carried out a survey to gather expertise on CLIL in languages other than English across ECML member states. In the spring of 2021, the survey was completed by experts from 29 countries. Read more

Survey results

The main results can be summarised as follows:

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is only found to a very limited extent in languages other than English. Transitions between levels of education are given very little attention. And CLIL is almost never linked to plurilingual education. Read more
