Digital literacy for the teaching and learning of languages

E-lang provides language teachers with resources which promote the use of “real-world tasks” in a pedagogical approach that fully integrates social interactions. E-lang ultimately supports learners to become competent and autonomous language users as well as digital citizens.

Introduction

The e-lang project (“Digital literacy for the teaching and learning of languages”) has developed, on the basis of the action-oriented approach of the CEFR, a pedagogical approach for the use of digital tools and resources in the context of language teaching and learning. The objective is to help learners become competent and autonomous language users and digital citizens.

By focusing on “real-world” tasks, carried out online on participatory sites, the e-lang approach emphasizes the importance of social interactions in human communication and action. Teachers will be able to explore and familiarise themselves with this approach by using

  • the didactic framework presented in the publication Towards a socio-interactional approach to foster autonomy in language learners and users; and
  • the modules on the e-training Moodle platform.

In addition, a guide is available for those who wish to facilitate a training session using the e-lang modules with a specific group of teachers.

Webinar

Webinar from 12 October 2018:
Real world tasks, digital resources and autonomy

In this two-part webinar in English and French, Christian Ollivier, project coordinator, and the e-lang team first present the socio-interactional approach and the notion of real-world tasks. This presentation is illustrated by concrete examples that can be implemented on web 2.0 sites. It demonstrates the value of real-world tasks in developing action and communicative competences. In the second part, the e-lang team shows how the use of digital resources and tools can help learners to: (a) carry out tasks, and (b) develop their autonomy while enriching their personal learning environments.

Publication

The book Towards a socio-interactional approach to foster autonomy in language learners and users explores a possible evolution of the action-oriented approach and the tasks associated to it as presented in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It introduces a socio-interactional approach to language teaching and learning and a new type of task to be implemented on the Web 2.0: real-world tasks.

E-training platform

The e-training platform offers several modules to become familiar with the e-lang approach: didactic foundations of the project, real-world tasks, informal language learning, oral and written reception, oral and written production, oral interaction, as well as grammatical, lexical, phonological and intercultural competences. You can opt for your own training path according to your needs. Access to all the online material is free: https://moodle.e-lang.ecml.at (click on “Log in as a guest” to access the modules).

Training guide for the Moodle platform

The objectives of this training guide to the training modules are to:

  • explain the basic principles of the e-lang approach;
  • explain the structure of the training;
  • support the trainer/facilitator in navigating the various steps of an e-lang training programme, namely digital literacy for the teaching and learning of languages.
