The “Los Pinos Declaration [Chapoltepek] – Making a Decade of Action for Indigenous Languages” (2022-2032) lays foundations for global planning for the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, which was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly on 18 December 2019. The Declaration comes out of the high-level closing event of the International Year of Indigenous Languages (IYIL2019) (27-28 February 2020, Mexico City, Mexico).

The Los Pinos Outcome Document presents the key lessons learnt from the activities performed and measures taken during IYIL2019 by UNESCO together with the United Nations system entities, Governments, organisations of indigenous peoples, broader civil society, academia, the private sector and other interested actors in 78 countries. It sets out the key guiding principles, includes milestones for developing the future Global Action Plan, highlights the expected impact and outcomes for the International Decade, and identifies strategic directions for enhancing inclusion and empowerment of indigenous language users in economic, political, social and cultural spheres.

UNESCO, as lead UN agency of the IYIL2019, will be coordinating the implementation of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages, in cooperation with other UN agencies and a wide range of stakeholders.
