This special issue of Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching is focusing on the work of the European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML) and includes the dimensions of theory, research and innovative practice of selected projects.

The introductory article in this issue, by the Executive Director of the ECML, Waldemar Martyniuk, and Susanna Slivensky, Deputy Executive Director and Head of Programmes, provides an overview of the Centre, including its 2008-2011 programme "Empowering language professionals". All of the projects reported here formed part of this programme and are introduced in the introductory article, which also informs us of the new programme for 2012-2015 "Learning through languages: Promoting inclusive, plurilingual and intercultural education".
