The Special Interest Group of the Japan Association of College English Teachers on English Language Education (JACET SIG on English Language Education) has started publishing a journal to promote the J-POSTL – an adaptation an ECML publication to the Japanese context – to report on developments in this area, to facilitate efforts to change existing practice and to contribute to the improvement of language teacher education as a whole in Japan. The JACET SIG on English Language Education has compiled three versions of Japanese Portfolio for Teachers of Languages (J-POSTL): J-POSTL Full Version for English Teacher Education, J-POSTL for Pre-service English Teacher Education, and J-POSTL for In-service English Teacher Education. These portfolios are adaptations of the European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages (EPOSTL) published by the European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML), Council of Europe, in 2007. The JACET SIG obtained the copyright to translate and adapt the EPOSTL in February 2014. The project benefitted from valuable assistance from many individuals both in Japan and overseas, and in particular from the guidance from two EPOSTL authors, Dr David Newby (Professor Emeritus, University of Graz, Austria) and Dr Barry Jones (Emeritus Fellow, University of Cambridge, UK). This journal will be produced semi-annually on-line and/or in print in both Japanese and English. Although this publication is intended mainly for the SIG members, contributions from all the stakeholders in the field of language education are welcome.
