Building blocks for planning language-sensitive teacher education

The aim of language-sensitive teacher education is to equip practising and future teachers to address the language and communication needs of their learners, making it a cornerstone of effective, inclusive education.

The ‘Building blocks’ resources are designed to support teacher educators and curriculum planners working with teachers of different languages and subjects in integrating language-sensitive approaches into their programmes, thereby enhancing teachers’ abilities to address linguistic diversity in the classroom.

Each of the 6 Building blocks, available in English and German, features a step-by-step approach to effectively prepare (future) teachers to create inclusive and linguistically responsive learning environments:

  1. Language-sensitive education: Understanding the principles and importance of language-sensitive teaching
  2. School curricula: Strategies for embedding language awareness within school curricula
  3. Teacher education curricula: Guidelines for incorporating language-sensitive methodologies into teacher education programmes
  4. Teacher education modules: Ready-to-use modules focused on language-sensitive teaching practices
  5. Teaching practice: Approaches for applying language-sensitive methods during teaching practice sessions
  6. Teacher competence profiles: Defining the competences required for effective language-sensitive education

Who is it for? Ideal for teacher educators and curriculum planners in pre-service and in-service teacher education designing and delivering programmes and courses of all languages and subjects.
