Linguee

Principal function(s): Translation tools

Linguee is a multilingual dictionary and translation tool. It is accessible online and as an app on iOS and Android. It is currently available in 25 languages. If one searches for a word or a phrase on Linguee, one will see its translation, pronunciation, common phrases and examples of usage in both languages. Linguee also offers external sources where it shows examples of that word/phrase being used. For unreliable sources, there is a caution sign. Evaluation: Linguee is a very useful tool for learning vocabulary in context. It uses DeepL and external resources to translate words and phrases. It allows learners to learn new words after seeing them in a sentence and not as isolated words. Linguee can be well combined with flashcard tools such as Anki.

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
