Hot Potatoes

Principal function(s): Crossword puzzle creatorsQuiz/exercise makers

Hot Potatoes is a software suite used for creating interactive exercises and quizzes for language learning and other educational purposes. Users can create various types of interactive exercises, including multiple-choice, short answer, crossword puzzles, and matching exercises, using the Hot Potatoes software. They can customise the exercises with their own content and formatting preferences. Once created, the exercises can be exported as HTML files and uploaded to learning management systems such as Moodle for students to access and complete. Hot Potatoes was developed by Martin Holmes and Stewart Arneil at the University of Victoria in Canada. Hot Potatoes is free to use. Users do not need to sign up or have an account to use Hot Potatoes but need to install it first. Evaluation: Hot Potatoes is a valuable and handy tool for producing quizzes, tests, crosswords, and other testing materials for educational purposes. It may take some time to create tests, but in the long run, it is a great time-saver for teachers. Average IT skills are required for its use.

Cost: Free without registration, requires installation.

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
