Crowd Signal

Principal function(s): Poll and survey creatorsQuiz/exercise makers

Crowd Signal is an online tool designed to create polls, surveys, and quizzes. Users can create and customise them by selecting different question types, adding options, and designing the layout. The quizzes can then be shared on websites or social media and distributed via email. Creators can also visualise the results collected on multiple devices using the free Crowd Signal app. It was developed by Automattic, the same company behind WordPress.com and WooCommerce. Crowd Signal offers both free and premium plans. To use Crowd Signal, users need to sign up for an account. Evaluation: Crowd Signal is a practical tool to create quizzes or surveys. Its functionalities make it suitable for the classroom since, for example, teachers can set a passing score and decide whether respondents get to see their scores. Through quizzes and surveys, they can test their students’ skills in grammar or vocabulary. The free account is adequate for making quizzes and surveys with up to 200 responses per month. Its straightforward design requires no IT skills for its use.

Cost: Free with registration + paid premium plans

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
