From crisis to opportunity: intergenerational language education in times of confinement and beyond
In the current context of a global health crisis, you are facing the challenge of teaching in a new remote working environment. So, whatever your discipline, you are faced with new linguistic challenges to ensure that the young people from “generations z and alpha” in our care, continue to learn.

We, the members of the EOL team, who have based our research on the creation of learning environments optimised by and for languages, would like to offer you a selection of 35 ideas to help you envisage and organise the best learning environment, adapted to the needs of these young people.

At the very heart of this proposal lies our desire to maintain the contact we have created with our classes and students. Even though the usual contacts take different forms, the time has come to bring out NEW FORMS OF PEDAGOGICAL RELATIONSHIPS, to create or recreate learning environments in which language takes on its full importance. In order to best respond to these LINGUISTIC CHALLENGES, you will discover activities and pathways for language teaching and learning where the use of digital tools can bring real added value.

In designing such environments, it is important to take two elements into account: the management of TIME  and SPACE. The perception of time changes considerably when space is restricted to a room or a building.

We therefore hope that you will be able to take advantage of this period in order to embrace INNOVATION through a pedagogical approach that takes the linguistic challenges into account and contributes to a better intergenerational understanding that will continue when our classes reopen.

When you click on one of the five coloured circles corresponding to the five issues described above, you will find a table organised in three columns.

In the first column you will find some characteristics of the “z and alpha generations” which then become challenges and opportunities in the second column. In the last column, you will find a description of suggested activities based on EOL project tools and designed to meet the challenge of a new learning environment, for and through languages. You can either use the tools independently of each other, or you can use them in different combinations. Moreover, you can use them get to know the EOL project in more depth and to re-design or to build a learning environment where languages flourish.

“Z and αlpha” generations: opportunities for language learning environments in times of confinement and beyond
Proposals for secondary schooling

Crisis can create opportunities. Under this motto, the EOL team tried to identify five key elements which could lead to a better understanding between generations and help set up friendly learning environments for young people. All 35 proposals are connected to the EOL matrix and/or to EOL tools.

[This] EOL toolkit is an extremely useful framework for e-learning language curriculum designers. The 5 keys are an effective paradigm to follow when planning and designing e-learning programmes which clearly aim to develop learners linguistic competencies along with their intercultural awareness and technological knowledge.  I can see the real benefits for language learners using such an e-learning design tool as it encourages action-based learning.  It offers lots of inspiration.

The secret agent’s handbook of language challenges

The handbook, developed for the European Day of Languages, offers a wide range of challenges to keep language learners motivated – in particular during a prolonged period away from the ‘physical’ language classroom. The handbook can easily be used by parents, teachers and/or students/children directly.

Taking on the role of a ‘secret agent’, the learner has a mission to complete which involves successfully carrying out as many of the 50 challenges as possible. The challenges focus on different basic skills and are set at different levels of difficulty.
