Examples of assessment

Formal assessment (or summative assessment) includes “exercises or procedures specifically designed to tap into a storehouse of skills and knowledge” (Brown, 2004, p. 6). Summative assessments tend to be more formal and aim to measure what the learner has learned, for example in a course, and it typically occurs at the end of course as a final exam and is of a formal nature (Fulcher & Davidson, 2007).

SLPI and NGT FA

The Sign Language Proficiency Interview for American Sign Language (SLPI:ASL) was developed at the Rochester Institute of Technology, NTID. The SLPI is a one-to-one interview situation between a learner and an interviewer. The interview is video-recorded and will be analysed separately by three raters with the SLPI rating scale. At the end, the three raters have to come up with an agreed rating. More information about the SLPI can be obtained from the RIT website

Some information about how the SLPI:ASL was adapted for Sign Language of the Netherlands (NGT) for use in the teacher/interpreter program at Hogeschool Utrecht, University of Applied Sciences, is also available on the ECML ProSign website. The Dutch adaptation is called NGT Functional Assessment (NFA).

See below for further information on the various resources on the NGT version of the SLPI.
