When assessing production, the focus is on the individual production of expressions in sign-language. This is done on the basis of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), categorised according to content, context, subject and specialisation in line with the respective competence levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2). Through a given stimulus for linguistic production, a monologue is to be produced in the target language.
This can be, for example:
- a report
- a piece of information
- a line of argument
-a narrative
After an appropriate preparation period, depending on the level of competence, a recording can be made with a fixed time limit. This can be adapted as the competence level increases. It is important to give learners the opportunity to correct themselves, if they notice any mistakes.
The requirements may vary depending on the level of competence; they are related to the CEFR. The sign-language expressions produced by the learners are analysed and assessed using the 'four-eyes' principle. This is done in line with the following criteria:
- (subject-specific aspects)
- range
- correctness
- fluency
- coherence
The results are converted into percentages and a grade is derived from the total percentage. It is possible to look at individual performance and compare it to the average of the group.
It might be a good idea to record the sign language utterance as a video. In this way, the pre-test situation gives the learner the opportunity to get ready for the content and structure of the actual task using the video recording. Another advantage of the recording is that the performance can also be assessed at a later time on the basis of the four-eyes principle.
