The tasks are directly inspired by what these sites encourage their users to do. For example, a participatory online encyclopaedia invites users to publish, modify and add to articles on subjects of interest. The comments section of an online newspaper or magazine article is an invitation to post an opinion on the article in question and to engage in discussion with other internet users.
These tasks give learners the opportunity to experience
- genuine communication with other internet users who are potentially interested in what learners write
- digital citizenship
Supervision is recommended in order to provide a grounding for these tasks both in the world outside the educational institution and in the teaching/learning situation: The learners carrying out the task can be given help when they need it as well as a secure framework to help them get to grips with the "digital wilds".
