DeepL Translate, an AI-powered translator
Autonomous learningGenerative AITranslation tools
Description: DeepL Translator is an online translation tool powered by artificial intelligence to provide translations between 32 languages. Users can input text or even attach documents to the interface and get a translation. DeepL offers a free limited version and does not require having an account for use, although logging in provides access to enhanced features and personalised settings. DeepL was developed by DeepL GmbH, a company based in Germany.
Evaluation: DeepL is a handy and time-saving tool, even in its free version. It provides accurate translations, arguably the most reliable translation software existing. However, it is important not to blindly trust DeepL since there might be mistakes in its translations, mainly when it comes to idioms, figurative meanings, and so on. For students, it is important to use this tool in an aware and critical way to improve their language proficiency. This can be done by paying attention to the optimal translation offered by DeepL, but also reflecting on the other possible translations that can be viewed by clicking on any word, to eventually choose the most suitable one. DeepL can also be used as a writing improvement tool for even one’s first language by translating a text into English and then back into the original language. The final text is then rid of grammar and punctuation mistakes and also stylistically more fine-tuned.
Cost: Free limited version + paid plans available.
