LanguageTool, a proofreading and grammar-checking tool
Autonomous learning
Description: LanguageTool is an online grammar and spell-checking tool for identifying writing errors and suggesting corrections in over 40 languages and dialects. Users input text into LanguageTool, which then analyses it in terms of grammar, punctuation, style, and spelling errors, providing suggestions and corrections to improve the overall quality and clarity of the writing. LanguageTools offers a browser version, together with extensions and add-ons for various applications, such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice. It offers a limited free version and does not require users to have an account, although signing in allows customising settings across different devices. LanguageTool was developed by Daniel Naber in 2003.
Evaluation: LanguageTool is a useful and practical tool for both teachers and students. For educators, it can be a time-saving resource for correcting learners’ texts, while it can help learners improve their writing skills by providing grammar, style and spell checking, as well as suggestions for synonyms. Students should be encouraged to use the tool proactively by noticing the mistakes detected by LanguageTool and paying close attention to the corrections. LanguageTool’s interface is intuitive and easy to use. It is, overall, a valuable tool in its free version, particularly with an account. It does not contain plagiarism detection or translation tools.
