Prodigy, a game app for learning maths and English

Game apps

Description: Prodigy is an online role-playing game for young learners to improve their maths and English. Learners create a wizard character and embark on an adventure to defeat monsters and earn rewards by solving maths or English problems. Prodigy covers mathematical topics such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and geometry, together with many English grammar elements. The game adjusts to the player's level and progress, allowing users to learn at their own pace. It offers a free limited version and requires login for use, although this is limited to username and password for students. Prodigy Education was created by Alex Peters and Rohan Mahimker in 2011.

Evaluation: Prodigy is a valuable tool since it makes learning maths and English more fun and entertaining for young students through its gamified interface. It can be used as a complementary resource to engage students of younger age, for example for 20 to 30 minutes a day. However, as with any game, Prodigy must be used in moderation since learners can get addicted to it. It provides reliable research articles assessing its positive impact on students’ language learning process.

Cost: Free limited version with registration + paid plans available.
