ActivePresenter

Principal function(s): Course managementImage and video editingScreen recording

ActivePresenter is an all-in-one screen recorder, video editor, and eLearning software. This tool makes it possible to create video tutorials, as well as eLearning content in HTML. Moreover, there is the option of simply importing a PowerPoint Presentation and then editing it. Users can include different types of activities in their eLearning materials such as quizzes or fill-in-blank questions. It was developed by Atomi Systems. Evaluation: ActivePresenter is an interactive tool that provides users with the possibility of creating their online content from scratch. It contains a wide range of features, which render the programme fully customisable. This makes the creation of video tutorials or eLearning content flexible and individual. The free version includes all the features and does not have a time limit, although it generates “watermarks” when exporting a video into other formats. It requires substantial IT skills and time to get familiarised with the tool at first, yet this pays off eventually since it is a valuable and versatile free tool. Installation is required.

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
