Vocaroo

Principal function(s): Audio recording

A free voice recording service. No registration is required. The use of a microphone is essential. After recording a message, the file must be saved if needed for a time period. Vocaroo does not provide permanent storage. There is no definite deadline for messages to get deleted, however, it is likely for them to expire after a few months. Evaluation: Vocaroo is a simple audio recording service that can be used by both teachers and students. It allows recording voice and playing it. It also provides a web link or code to embed an icon into a webpage or blog. It also allows e-mailing a recording or downloading and saving the file to a computer. It is probably the easiest existing tool for audio recording since no registration is required. One disadvantage to Vocaroo is that the recordings are deleted after a month or two. If the file created is meant to be used longer than that, it should be downloaded and saved into a computer.

Cost: Free without registration

Respect for privacy Does the tool require registration? Who can see my data? Can I remain anonymous?

High. Vocaroo only collects email addresses and mobile numbers when users register or log in to a Vocaroo account. It might also collect IP addresses and web browser details in server log files, but only when necessary for debugging purposes. It uses this data to manage Vocaroo accounts and send news and updates, in case users opt-in to this. Through its mailing list, Vocaroo sends occasional information regarding updates or new features. It also collects cookies for the purpose of keeping users signed in and storing account data. Vocaroo claims to store data with well-known cloud storage providers located within the European Union, although it does not provide more specific details. It warns users that Vocaroo has not been designed to share highly private or confidential audio since the short, shareable, nature of the links does not provide the highest degrees of security required for confidential purposes. Vocaroo acknowledges users’ rights to access, modify or correct personal data. Vocaroo implicitly states compliance with the GDPR. See more here.

Latest addition to the ICT-REV inventory

Playphrase (Tool to find the pronunciation of words from movies )

Playphrase is a tool that searches specific words or phrases out of movie snippets from a database of audiovisual media with over 60,000 phrases. In this manner, it provides real-life examples of words’ and sentences’ pronunciation. Users just have to type specific phrases, watch them being used naturally in context within popular movies and TV shows, and listen to their pronunciation. Playphrase works mainly with English. Playphrase is not open-source, but it is freely available. It does not require setting up an account or signing in. ... View details
