26 September: Celebrate the European Day of Languages with us! #coeEDL

Edit

Explore the online calendar of EDL activities and add your events!

With the 18th edition of the European Day of Languages (EDL) just a few days away, there are lots of exciting activities and features to look forward to!

Over 600 events, involving an estimated 250,000 participants, are currently registered in the online calendar of EDL activities (https://edl.ecml.at/edlevents). These are due to take place all over Europe and indeed cover every continent of the world. Although this is already impressive, if you are involved in organising an event which is not yet featured in the calendar – please do add it, as we are aiming to top the 1,200 events registered last year! It is also in this way that we can get a true idea of the diversity and scope of the events celebrating the Day.

Handbook of Language Challenges and initiative for the Day

A new feature for this year is the Handbook of Language Challenges (https://edl.ecml.at/languagechallenge). We are inviting everyone to participate in a language challenge around the European Day of Languages! The 51 challenges contained within the handbook encourage learners to go a little outside their comfort zone and take advantage of the plentiful opportunities available to practice or learn more about a language beyond a classroom context. You can choose easy challenges that don’t involve much time – such as “count from 1-10 in 3 different languages within one minute” to ones that are a bit more demanding “together with a friend, write the words to a song/rap in a foreign language”. There should be something for everyone and you may discover that you actually know more than you think about languages!

By the time of the Day, the handbook will be available in over 20 languages (so far, the ones available are: Albanian, Belarusian, Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin, Danish, German, English, Estonian, Greek, French, Hungarian, Italian, Lithuanian, Luxembourgish, Macedonian, Slovene, Slovak, Swedish).

Participants managing over 20 challenges can reward themselves with a certificate that can be generated on the site.

What do you dare to do in a foreign language?

The ‘51st challenge’ contained in the Handbook of Language Challenges entitled 'What do you dare to do in a foreign language?' is a special initiative specifically for the Day, where participants are invited to post a short video clip (no longer than 30 seconds) to the European Day of Languages’ website around this motif. It can be based on one or more of the challenges in the handbook, or can be entirely their own idea. A short video of the most creative entries will then be compiled on the European Day of Languages’ website.

Competitions galore!

In addition to the Handbook of Language Challenges, the following competitions will be running this year:

  • ‘Which language is it?’ is an opportunity to test how good you are in identifying different languages – from snippets of conversations. Please note - It is certainly not easy!
    https://edl.ecml.at/whichlanguage
  • EDL t-shirt design contest for the 2020 European Day of Languages. Over 1000 entries were received for last year’s contest - it would be wonderful if we can maintain or even exceed this level of interest.

  • The voting feature for the most innovative European Day of Languages’ event in 2019 will be open from will 20 September – 20 October, with a ‘modest’ prize for the event receiving the most votes.

Last minute materials and up to date information

As demand has been particularly strong this year and it is not always possible to get materials, at short notice, the downloadable materials’ section of the EDL website has been expanded with a number of resources that event organisers and schools can reproduce themselves. These now include posters, postcards, banners, graphic images and logos for social media and printing as well as flyers in 26 languages.

It is also possible to purchase a t-shirt with the winning EDL design for 2019.

Social media
On a dedicated EDL Facebook page we are running a series of posts promoting the Day in the build up to the 26 September.
And on Twitter we are using the hashtag #coeEDL to publicise activities taking place on the Day.

ECML 25th Anniversary Conference

Languages at the heart of learning: 25 years of inspiring innovation

On Thursday 5 and Friday 6 December 2019 the European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe will organise a high-level conference to celebrate its 25th anniversary (as well as the Council of Europe’s 70th anniversary) and reflect on the important contribution made by the Centre to the field of language education. The event will also showcase the results of the ECML’s current programme - Languages at the heart of learning - and launch the next programme 2020-23 - Inspiring innovation in language education: changing contexts, evolving competences.

The conference will focus on key political challenges related to language education and particular aspects of language education, including the range of tools and capacity-building activities organised by the Centre to help bridge the gap between policy and practical implementation.

Through keynote speeches, panel discussions and interactive presentations, the role of quality language education in fostering a culture of democracy will be addressed - why it matters and what it looks like. There will be discussion of key policy developments such as the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly Recommendation on protecting and promoting sign languages in Europe and the Council of the European Union’s Recommendation on a comprehensive approach to the teaching and learning of languages, as well as consideration of the ECML’s role as the interface between policy, research, teacher education and practice.

In addition to participants funded by the Council of Europe and/or nominated by National Authorities, the conference will be open to the wider public on a self-financing basis. You will be able to register online at www.ecml.at from Tuesday 1st October 2019. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis
